North America

According to Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) first day of fasting will be Monday, May 6, 2019.

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal.  FCNA uses the criteria of European Council of Fatwa and Research (ECFR), which are that somewhere on the globe, at the sunset, the elongation should be at least 8 degrees and moon should be at least 5 degrees above the horizon. If these conditions are met, the new crescent will be visible somewhere on earth. Hence the new lunar month will start the next day, otherwise, it will start on the day following next day.

On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1440 AH are established as follows:

Ramadan 1440 AH:

The Astronomical New Moon is on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 22:47 Universal Time. On that day, there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and the moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore Ramadan cannot start on the next day. Hence the first day of Ramadan 1440 is on Monday, May 6, 2019, insha’Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Sunday night.

Eid ul-Fitr 1440 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on Monday, June 3, 2019, at 10:03 Universal Time. On that day, near Miami, Florida at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and the moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore the first day of Shawwal 1440 is Tuesday, June 4, 2019, insha’Allah.

Europe

According to European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) first day of fasting will be Monday, May 6, 2019.

The accurate astronomical calculations for the month of Ramadan 1440H confirm that the pairing will be at 22 and 45 minutes GMT on Saturday (04) May 2019 corresponding to 29 Sha'ban 1440H, which corresponds to 01:45 am Local time of Makkah. Therefore, the crescent cannot be seen on the following day Sunday (May 05, 2019); therefore, Sunday will be the end of the month of Shaaban 1440 AH, so the number of Shaaban this year will be thirty days.

The first of Ramadan for this year 1440 AH, God willing, will be on Monday (06) May 2019.

For the crescent of the month of Shawwal 1440 - 2019 AD

The accurate astronomical calculations for the month of Shawwal 1440H confirm that the pairing will be at 10:02 GMT on Monday, 03 June 2019 corresponding to 29 Ramadan 1440H, which corresponds to 13:01 local time of Mecca. The crescent can be seen on the same day after sunset in most of South America.

Accordingly, it will be the first of Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr) for this year 1440 AH, God willing, will be on Tuesday (04) June 2019.

Moon Sighting for Ramadan 1440

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on May 4, 2019 (Saturday) at 22:47 UT. On May 4, there is no chance of sighting anywhere. On May 5, there is a very small possibility of moonsighting by a high powered telescope in Australia, Middle-East, and Europe. On May 5, Eastern Americas have a small chance of seeing by the human eye, and Western Americas have a good chance of a sighting. On May 6, the moon can be easily seen in the whole world (Click here to see visibility curves and the earliest authentic moon sighting reports when information is received).

You who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may be mindful of God.

Fast for a specific number of days, but if one of you is ill, or on a journey, on other days later. For those who can fast only with extreme difficulty, there is a way to compensate–– feed a needy person. But if anyone does good of his own accord, it is better for him, and fasting is better for you, if only you knew.

It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. So any one of you who is present that month should fast, and anyone who is ill or on a journey should make up for the lost days by fasting on other days later. God wants ease for you, not hardship. He wants you to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him for having guided you, so that you may be thankful. Quran 2:183-185
