According to the Islamic Shura Council of North America and the Fiqh Council of North America, the moon was sighted in North America on November 15, 2001. Therefore, the 1st of Ramadan will be on Friday, November 16, 2001. According to the National Coordinator for Astronomical Information of Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Hilal for Ramadan 1422 AH was sighted in Tucson, Arizona in the evening of Thursday, November 15, 2001. The height of the Hilal was from 3 to 4 finger widths above the mountains. The Hilal was to the left of the Sun.

Just once I wish the Muslims "in charge" in this country could get their act together and decide once and for all when Ramadhan begins and when it ends. Last night on this very website I read that it would not be possible for the moon to be seen on the North American continent by the naked eye. Tonight I read here that the moon was sighted in Tuczon, Arizona on Thursday. For the first time since I have become a Muslim the first day of Ramadhan has come and gone and I did not fast, though my intention, as always, had been to do so. I feel terrible about this, though the only reason I had for NOT fasting today was the fact that you had told everyone here that SATURDAY would be the first day of Ramadhan and I even sent your link to all my curious non-Muslim friends for their information. How do I explain the previous "impossible to be seen moon on Thursday" to be seen? What am I supposed to do now? Am I expected to make up today or am I exempt because I was mislead but had the correct intention? The moon was NOT vsisble here in the Chicago area last night. If it wasn't visible in California via mathematical calculation, how could it be seen between here and there?

Salamou Alaikoum

Many muslims were misled this year by the premature forecast of the first day of Ramadan as being on Saturday.

During the last five years, I personnally followed our "proud and so special organization of the North American Society in fasting and festing, because I really believed that each person should fast according to the moonsighting in his country.

Our beloved Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said that We should fast at it's sighting [the moon] and break-fast at it's sighting [Or as he said PBUH]. So, who are "we"? If we are one Muslim Oumma, we should do it all at once, just the way we fast the day of Arafat.

However, people who still believe that the meaning of "We" may also be "citizen of one country or region" are inshaAllah not wrong. But, in this era of hi-tech and telecommunications, shouldn't we use hi-tech and telecommunications to help consolidate at least this Oumma's words.

InshaAllah, my family and I made our mind that as of next year -if we make it till then, we will fast with Saudi Arabia. United we stand :-/

By this sacred month, I wish all of us the blessing of Allah, His forgiveness and that He save us from hellfire.

Salam

Assalam walikum,

Ramadan is the most auspicious month for all the muslims of the world but why do we always(every year) have problems with the starting date of first Ramadan. When we muslims cant get a united stance on this basic pillar of islam, how can we get united on other issues.
I called yesterday to a local islamic center to find out when is the first of Ramadan and the recorded message said that first Ramadan is Saturday Nov 17th. Now I found out that today Nov 16th is the first of Ramadan. So I missed my first day. Thanks for causing misunderstanding!!!!

Essalamou Aleikoum,

I had three confirmations from 3 different mosques in Montreal that Ramadhan was not going to start today, this was around 10pm. Now I found out this morning that it started today, I only drunk water this morning around 8:00 am, I started fasting the minute I knew, can I still fast, please inform me what can I do? I really don't feel good about not knowing, how can 3 mosques be wrong! Your advices will be highly appreciated, thank you.

May allah be with us

As Salamu Alaikum:

Every year this is a misunderstanding on the date of the beginning of Saum (Fasting). The Sunna is physical site of the crescent in your community.

www.moonsighting.com claims that Sat 17 Nov 2001 is the first of Ramadan and the only can be seen by the naked eye on friday. Really confusing every year. The entire Islamic community requires a Shura that speaks for the entire Ummah in the world. Because the qualifications of being learn in every Muslim community varies depending upon wealth, country origin, and nationality it appears this will never be settled. Site you own moon in your communities.

Practicing the Sunna of Nabi Muhammad (SAWS)

Would love to have a dialogue with Muslim worldwide. Seeking a wife also.

About me:

African American from New York City father is from Kenya, Mombasa and mother from NYC.

Searching for a Muslimah who is pious, following the Sunna, A Muslimah who respects her duties to Allah, then husband, then family. A Muslimah who implements Islamic culture and not African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Asian, or American cultures. If you know the difference then contact me at [email protected]

As stated in the calendar, we are going to fast for only 29 days. Can u pls enlighten me regarding this? Should we not follow the Head of Islam in Singapore and follow the the Arabs ?? Thanks

I just called the Muslim Society of Illinois and they have a recording that moon was not sighted on 11/15/01, therefore the first of Ramadan will be on Saturday, 11/17/01. I would appreciate if you contact them and both the parties come to one conclusion. We are so divided on small things like this. It is about time that we unite not only on small things but also on major conflicts.
