Sahih al-Bukhari 6811 (Book 86, Hadith 40) #6553
The Biggest Sins

SUMMARY: The biggest sin is to worship anyone other than Allah, followed by killing your child and then committing adultery.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Which is the biggest sin?" He said, "To set up rivals to Allah by worshipping others though He alone has created you". I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your child lest it should share your food". I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor".

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only Allah; Respect Life; Respect Marriage/Relationships

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the three biggest sins according to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The first and foremost sin is to set up rivals to Allah by worshipping anyone other than Him, even though He alone has created us. This means that we should only worship Allah and no one else. The second biggest sin is killing your own child, which means that it is wrong for a parent to take away the life of their own child for any reason whatsoever. Lastly, the third biggest sin mentioned in this hadith is committing illegal sexual intercourse with someone else's wife or husband which goes against Islamic teachings as it causes harm not only to the couple but also their families and society at large. All these sins are considered major in Islam and should be avoided at all costs if one wishes to lead a righteous life according to Islamic teachings.
