Sahih al-Bukhari 6810 (Book 86, Hadith 39) #6552
Repentance After Wrongdoing

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that those who commit illegal sexual intercourse, theft, or drink alcohol are not believers at the time of their actions, but they can still repent and be forgiven.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink is not a believer at the time of drinking. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is open thereafter".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for forgiveness from Allah when you make a mistake and try your best not to repeat it. Stay away from sins so as not to put yourself in a position where repentance may become necessary.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that even if we make mistakes and do something wrong, we can still be forgiven by Allah if we sincerely repent. We must remember to always ask for forgiveness from Allah when we make a mistake and try our best not to repeat it. It is important to remember that no matter how bad our mistake is, Allah will always forgive us if we truly regret what we have done and turn back to Him in repentance.

The Prophet Muhammad also taught us that those who commit illegal sexual intercourse, theft or drink alcohol are not believers at the time of their actions. However, this does not mean that they cannot be forgiven; rather it means that they must sincerely repent in order for Allah to forgive them. We should strive to stay away from these sins so as not to put ourselves in a position where repentance may become necessary.
