Sahih al-Bukhari 6809 (Book 86, Hadith 38) #6551
The Power of Repentance

SUMMARY: Repentance is the key to restoring faith in Allah after committing a sin.

Narrated 'Ikrima from Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Messenger s said, "When a slave (of Allah) commits illegal sexual intercourse, he is not a believer at the time of committing it; and if he steals, he is not a believer at the time of stealing; and if he drinks an alcoholic drink, when he is not a believer at the time of drinking it; and he is not a believer when he commits a murder," 'Ikrima said: I asked Ibn Abbas, "How is faith taken away from him?" He said, Like this," by clasping his hands and then separating them, and added, "But if he repents, faith returns to him like this, by clasping his hands again.

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn towards Allah and ask for forgiveness when you commit a sin

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of repentance and how it can restore faith in Allah. It was narrated by 'Ikrima from Ibn 'Abbas, who said that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that when a person commits an illegal sexual intercourse, steals, drinks alcohol or commits murder, they are not believers at the time of committing these sins. He then demonstrated how faith is taken away by clasping his hands and separating them. However, if they repent for their sins then their faith will be restored like he demonstrated by clasping his hands again. This hadith teaches us that no matter what we do wrong in our lives, we should always turn to Allah and ask for forgiveness as repentance is the key to restoring our faith in Him.
