Sahih al-Bukhari 6625 (Book 83, Hadith 5) #6372
The Greater Sin of Fulfilling an Oath

SUMMARY: Making expiation for an oath that may harm one's family is better than fulfilling it.

Allah's Messenger also said: "By Allah, if anyone of you insists on fulfilling an oath by which he may harm his family, he commits a greater sin in Allah's sight than that of dissolving his oath and making expiation for it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make amends when necessary; Ask forgiveness from Allah when needed; Protect your family at all times; Keep your promises .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of protecting one’s family and how it is more important than fulfilling an oath. It teaches us that if we make a promise or take an oath to do something which may cause harm to our family then we should not fulfill it and instead make expiation for it. This means that we should apologize and ask for forgiveness from Allah for making such a promise or taking such an oath in the first place. We should also try to make up for any damage caused by our actions as much as possible. This hadith reminds us of the importance of keeping our families safe and secure at all times and not doing anything which could put them in danger or cause them any harm.
