Sahih al-Bukhari 6626 (Book 83, Hadith 6) #6373
The Sin of Harmful Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking an oath that may harm one's family is a sin and should be compensated for by making expiation.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "Anyone who takes an oath through which his family may be harmed, and insists on keeping it, he surely commits a sin greater (than that of dissolving his oath). He should rather compensate for that oath by making expiation".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making any commitments or promises; Be responsible for your words and actions; Protect your family from potential harm you may cause them through your decisions and behaviour; Make expiation if you take an oath which could potentially harm your family/loved ones

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of being mindful when taking an oath. An oath is a serious commitment and should not be taken lightly. If someone takes an oath that may cause harm to their family or loved ones, they are committing a greater sin than breaking the oath itself. To make up for this mistake, they must make expiation in order to atone for their wrong-doing. This hadith teaches us to think carefully before making any commitments or promises as we are responsible for our words and actions. It also reminds us of the importance of protecting our families from any potential harm we may cause them through our own decisions and behaviour.
