Sahih al-Bukhari 6251 (Book 79, Hadith 25) #6004
The Proper Way of Praying

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of praying properly and how to do it.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man entered the mosque while Allah's Messenger was sitting in one side of the mosque. The man prayed, came, and greeted the Prophet. Allah's Messenger said to him, "Wa 'Alaikas Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray as you have not prayed (properly)". The man returned, repeated his prayer, came back and greeted the Prophet. The Prophet said, "Wa alaika-s-Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray again as you have not prayed (properly)". The man said at the second or third time, "O Allah's Messenger ! Kindly teach me how to pray". The Prophet said, "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly and then face the Qibla and say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar), and then recite what you know from the Qur'an, and then bow with calmness till you feel at ease then rise from bowing, till you stand straight, and then prostrate calmly (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease and then prostrate with calmness (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease in the sitting position, and do likewise in whole of your prayer". And Abu Usama added, "Till you stand straight".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Huraira and it talks about the importance of praying properly. It explains that when a person enters the mosque and prays, they should perform ablution properly first. Then they should face the qibla and say takbir before reciting what they know from the Quran. After that, they should bow with calmness until they feel at ease then rise from bowing till standing straight again. They should then prostrate calmly until feeling at ease before raising their head again to sit with calmness till feeling at ease in sitting position. This process should be repeated throughout their prayer for it to be considered proper prayer according to this hadith. The Prophet Muhammad also taught us that we must pray with humility and concentration so that our prayers are accepted by Allah SWT. We must also remember that prayer is an important part of our faith as Muslims and we must strive to make sure we are performing our prayers correctly in order for them to be accepted by Allah SWT.
