The Use of Pronouns

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ disliked the use of the pronoun "I" when Jabir came to consult him regarding his father's debt.

Narrated Jabir: I came to the Prophet in order to consult him regarding my father's debt. When I knocked on the door, he asked, "Who is that?" I replied, "I" He said, "I, I?" He repeated it as if he disliked it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful and respectful when speaking with others; use proper language even in informal settings; be aware that your words can have an impact on how people perceive you and your intentions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of using proper language when speaking to others, especially in a formal setting. When Jabir came to consult with the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding his father's debt, he used the pronoun "I" instead of addressing himself by name. The Prophet (ﷺ) responded by repeating it as if he disliked it, indicating that it was not an appropriate way to address someone in a formal setting. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful and respectful when speaking with others, and use proper language even in informal settings. We should also be aware that our words can have an impact on how people perceive us and our intentions.
