The Power of Positive Names

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us to choose positive names for ourselves and our children.

Malik related to me from Yahya ibn Said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked about a milk camel about to be milked, "Who milks this camel?" A man stood up. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "What is your name?" The man said, "Murra (bitterness)". The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "Sit down". Then he said, "Who milks this one?" A man stood up and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "What is your name?" He said, "Harb (war)". The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Sit down". Then he said, "Who milks this camel?" A man stood up, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "What is your name?" The man said, ''Yaish (he lives)". The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "Milk!"

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose positive names for yourself & your children .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the power of positive names. It was narrated by Malik ibn Anas from Yahya ibn Said that the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked a man who was about to milk a camel what his name was. When he said “Murra” which means bitterness, the Prophet told him to sit down and asked another man what his name was. When he said “Harb” which means war, the Prophet again told him to sit down. Finally, when a third man said his name was “Yaish” which means he lives, the Prophet allowed him to milk the camel. This hadith teaches us that we should choose positive names for ourselves and our children as they can have an effect on our lives in both good and bad ways. We should strive to pick names that are uplifting and inspiring so that we can live better lives with more positivity in them!
