The Consequences of Fire-Related Names

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab warned a man about the consequences of having names that are related to fire.

Yahya related to me from Yahya ibn Said that Umar ibn al-Khattab asked a man what his name was. He said, "Jamra (live coal)"".The son of who?" He said, "Ibn Shihab (meteor, flame)"".From whom?" He said, "From al-Huraqa (burning)"".Where do you live?" He said, "At Harrat an-Nar (lava field of the fire)".At which one of them?" He said, "At Dhati Ladha (one with flames)". Umar said, "Go and look at your family - they have been burned". Yahya added, "It was as Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said".

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose meaningful and positive values reflecting names for oneself or one’s children instead of ones associated with destruction or violence .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of choosing appropriate names for oneself and one's children. Umar ibn al-Khattab was speaking to a man who had given his son a name that was related to fire. He asked him where he lived and when he said "At Dhati Ladha" which means "one with flames", Umar warned him that his family may have been burned due to their choice of name. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when choosing names for ourselves or our children as it can have serious consequences in the future. We should choose names that are meaningful and reflect positive values such as kindness, generosity, patience etc., rather than ones associated with destruction or violence.
