(Book 54, Hadith 17) #36825
Respect for Property Rights

SUMMARY: No one should take something that does not belong to them without permission.

Malik related to me from Nafi from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "No one should milk someone else's cow without his permission. Would any of you like someone to come to his apartment, break into his larder, and take his food? The udders of cows guard their food for their owners, so no one should milk someone else's cow without his permission".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for permission before taking or using something that belongs to someone else.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about respecting the property rights of others. It teaches us that we should not take something that does not belong to us without permission from the owner. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used an example of someone breaking into a larder and taking food as an analogy for why we should not milk someone else's cow without their permission. He was emphasizing how important it is to respect the property rights of others and get their consent before taking anything from them. We must always remember to ask for permission before taking or using something that belongs to someone else, even if it seems small or insignificant.
