Cupping While Fasting

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar used to be cupped while fasting, but later stopped doing so until he had broken the fast.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to be cupped while he was fasting. Nafi said, "He later stopped doing that, and would not be cupped when he was fasting until he had broken the fast".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your religious obligations; Be cautious when engaging in activities that could potentially break your religious obligations; Understand traditional medical practices like cupping and its potential effects on your health & wellbeing during times you observe religious obligations like Ramadan etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of cupping while fasting. Cupping is a traditional medical practice in which a cup is placed on the skin to create suction and draw out blood from certain areas of the body. It was practiced by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions as well as many Muslims today for various health benefits. In this hadith, it is mentioned that Abdullah ibn Umar used to be cupped while he was fasting but later stopped doing so until he had broken his fast. This suggests that it may not be permissible to perform cupping during fasting hours as it could lead to breaking one's fast unintentionally due to excessive bleeding or other reasons related to health or safety concerns. Therefore, it would be best for those who wish to perform cupping during Ramadan or any other time when they are fasting should do so after breaking their fast in order for them not break their fast unintentionally due to any unforeseen circumstances related with performing this procedure while they are still in a state of fasting.
