Repentance for Breaking Fast During Ramadan

SUMMARY: A bedouin man came to the Prophet (PBUH) and confessed that he had intercourse with his wife while fasting in Ramadan. The Prophet (PBUH) asked him if he could free a slave or give away a camel, but the man said no. So, the Prophet (PBUH) gave him a basket of dates and told him to give it away as charity or eat them and fast one day for the day when he had intercourse.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ata ibn Abdullah al-Khurasani that Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "A bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, beating his breast and tearing out his hair and saying, 'I am destroyed'. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Why is that?', and he said, 'I had intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan'. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked him, 'Are you able to free a slave?', and the man said, 'No'. Then he asked him, 'Are you able to give away a camel?', and the man replied, 'No'. He said, 'Sit own,' and someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said to the man, 'Take this and give it away as sadaqa'. The man said, 'There is no one more needy than me,' and (the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace), said, 'Eat them, and fast one day for the day when you had intercourse'. " Malik said that Ata said that he had asked Said ibn al-Musayyab how many dates there were in that basket, and he said, "Between fifteen and twenty Sa'.'

EXPLANATIONS:
This Hadith is about repentance for breaking fast during Ramadan. A Bedouin man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ confessing that he had intercourse with his wife while fasting in Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ asked him if he could free a slave or give away a camel, but since this was not possible, instead of punishing him, the Prophet ﷺ showed mercy by giving him a basket of dates and telling him either to give it away as charity or eat them and fast one day for each date eaten in place of the day when he had intercourse. This Hadith teaches us about repentance being an important part of our faith; even though we may have committed sins we should always seek forgiveness from Allah SWT through sincere repentance so that He may forgive us our sins out of His mercy and kindness towards us as His servants. It also teaches us about how merciful our beloved prophet Muhammad ﷺ was; even though this Bedouin man broke an important rule during Ramadan, instead of punishing him severely like many people would have done at that time, Muhammad ﷺ showed mercy by giving this man an alternative way out which would still allow Allah SWT's forgiveness upon repenting sincerely without having any negative consequences on his life due to his mistake.
