Eating and Drinking Until Adhan is Called

SUMMARY: Bilal calls the adhan in the night, and people should eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the adhan.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Bilal calls the adhan in the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the adhan". Ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man who did not call the adhan until someone said to him, "The morning has come. The morning has come".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take advantage of one's time; be mindful of others' needs; fulfill religious obligations on time; help those in need when possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about a practice of eating and drinking until a call to prayer is made. The Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that Bilal would make the call to prayer at night time. People were then instructed to eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum called for prayer. Ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man who could not call for prayer until someone told him that morning had come. This hadith teaches us that we should take advantage of our time by eating or drinking when it is permissible, as long as we do not forget our obligations towards Allah such as praying on time. We should also be mindful of those who are less fortunate than us, like Ibn Umm Maktum who was blind, so that we can help them in any way possible.
