The Importance of Praying Witr

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of praying Witr and how it was commanded by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

It was narrated that a man from the tribe of Banu Asad said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) came out to us when the mu'adhdhin gave the call to Fajr prayer and said: The Messenger of Allah has enjoined us to pray Witr and this is the time for it. Then he said: Give the iqamah for prayer, O ibn Un-Nawwahah.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ، حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ، مِنْ عَنَزَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ، مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ حِينَ ثَوَّبَ الْمُثَوِّبُ لِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَرَنَا بِوِتْرٍ فَثَبَتَ لَهُ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَقِمْ يَا ابْنَ النَّوَّاحَةِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of praying witr, which is an additional prayer performed after Isha prayer. It was narrated that a man from Banu Asad said that Ali ibn Abi Talib came out to them when the mu'adhdhin gave the call to Fajr prayer and said that the Messenger of Allah has enjoined us to pray witr and this is its time. He then instructed Ibn Un-Nawwahah to give iqamah for prayer. This hadith emphasizes on following what has been commanded by Allah's Messenger and performing extra prayers such as witr in order to gain more rewards from Allah Almighty. It also teaches us about obedience towards our elders and leaders as Ali ibn Abi Talib instructed Ibn Un-Nawwahah to give iqamah for prayer. Furthermore, it encourages us to perform our religious obligations at their due times so we can reap maximum benefits from them.
