Compassion in War: The Prophet's Instruction at the Battle of Badr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed his followers to capture, but not kill, members of the Banu 'Abdul-Muttalib tribe who were forced to fight against them in the Battle of Badr.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah said on the day of Badr: "whoever you can capture of Banu 'Abdul-Muttalib, capture him (and do not kill him), for they were forced to come out".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion and mercy even during times of war . Stand up for those who are oppressed or taken advantage off by powerful people or groups .

EXPLANATIONS:
During the Battle of Badr, which was fought between Muslims and non-Muslims in 624 CE, Prophet Muhammad instructed his followers to show compassion towards their enemies. He specifically told them not to kill members of Banu 'Abdul-Muttalib who were forced by their leaders to fight against Muslims. This hadith teaches us that even during times of war we should show mercy and compassion towards our enemies. It also shows us that it is important for us to stand up for those who are oppressed or taken advantage off by powerful people or groups.
