This hadith is about the appropriateness of rings that one wears. The Prophet Muhammad saw a man wearing a gold ring and told him to throw it away, as it was not appropriate for him. He then acquired an iron ring, which the Prophet said was even worse. He then acquired a silver ring, which the Prophet did not comment on.
