Musnad Ahmad 132 (Book 2, Hadith 50) #33825
The Appropriateness of Rings

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad saw a man wearing a gold ring and told him to throw it away, as it was not appropriate for him. He then acquired an iron ring, which the Prophet said was even worse. He then acquired a silver ring, which the Prophet did not comment on.

Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar told us that 'Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allah saw a ring of gold on a man's hand and he said: "Throw it away," so he threw it away and acquired a ring of iron. He said: 'This is even worse'. Then he acquired a ring of silver, and he did not say anything,

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of what you wear in public; dress modestly and appropriately in order to show respect for yourself and others around you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the appropriateness of rings that one wears. The Prophet Muhammad saw a man wearing a gold ring and told him to throw it away, as it was not appropriate for him. He then acquired an iron ring, which the Prophet said was even worse. He then acquired a silver ring, which the Prophet did not comment on. This teaches us that we should be mindful of what we wear and how we present ourselves in public; certain items may be inappropriate or too flashy for certain occasions or people. We should strive to dress modestly and appropriately in order to show respect for ourselves and others around us.
