Musnad Ahmad 133 (Book 2, Hadith 51) #33826
Preference for Abu Bakr as Leader

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Ansar's preference for Abu Bakr to lead the prayer after the death of Prophet Muhammad.

It was narrated from Zirr that 'Abdullah said: When the Messenger of Allah died, the Ansar said: A leader from among us and a leader from among you'.Umar went to them and said: O Ansar, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ordered Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer? Which of you would like himself to be given precedence over Abu Bakr? The Ansar said: We seek refuge with Allah from being given precedence over Abu Bakr.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect authority figures , Obey leaders' decisions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how after the death of Prophet Muhammad, the Ansar wanted a leader from among them and a leader from among those who migrated with him. Umar then reminded them that Prophet Muhammad had already appointed Abu Bakr to lead in prayer. When asked if anyone would like to be given precedence over Abu Bakr, they refused and sought refuge with Allah from being given precedence over him. This shows us that even though they were close companions of Prophet Muhammad and were part of his community since before he migrated to Medina, they still respected his decision and accepted it without any hesitation or argument. It also teaches us that we should always respect our leaders' decisions even if we don't agree with them because it is part of our faith as Muslims to obey those in authority over us.
