Sahih al-Bukhari 3420 (Book 60, Hadith 92) #3270
The Beloved Fasting and Prayer of Prophet David

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that the most beloved fasting and prayer to Allah was that of Prophet David, who used to fast on alternate days and pray for one third of the night.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: Allah's Messenger said to me, "The most beloved fasting to Allah was the fasting of (the Prophet) David who used to fast on alternate days. And the most beloved prayer to Allah was the prayer of David who used to sleep for (the first) half of the night and pray for 1/3 of it and (again) sleep for a sixth of it".

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is teaching us about the beloved fasting and prayer of Prophet David. He said that the most beloved fasting to Allah was when he would fast on alternate days. Additionally, he said that the most beloved prayer to Allah was when he would sleep for half of the night, then pray for one third of it, followed by sleeping again for a sixth part. This teaches us how important it is to dedicate time in our lives specifically for worshiping Allah through both fasting and praying. We should strive to make our worship as perfect as possible so we can gain His pleasure in return.
