Sahih al-Bukhari 3419 (Book 60, Hadith 91) #3269
The Benefits of Fasting

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-As to fast three days a month, as it is equivalent to fasting for a whole year. He also suggested that if he was able to fast more, he should follow the example of Prophet David who used to fast on alternate days and would not flee on facing the enemy.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-As: The Prophet said to me, "I have been informed that you pray all the nights and observe fast all the days; is this true?" I replied, "Yes". He said, "If you do so, your eyes will become weak and you will get bored. So fast three days a month, for this will be the fasting of a whole year, or equal to the fasting of a whole year". I said, "I find myself able to fast more". He said, "Then fast like the fasting of (the Prophet) David who used to fast on alternate days and would not flee on facing the enemy".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of fasting in Islam and its many benefits. It is narrated by Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-As that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked him if it was true that he prayed all nights and observed fast all days. To this, Abdullah replied in affirmative. The Prophet then advised him to fast three days a month as it is equivalent to fasting for an entire year. He further suggested that if one has the capacity, they should follow the example of prophet David who used to observe alternate day fasting and would not flee from battle when faced with an enemy. This hadith teaches us about moderation in our religious practices so we can benefit from them without overburdening ourselves or becoming bored with them. It also encourages us to be brave like prophet David when faced with difficult situations or enemies instead of running away from them out of fear or cowardice.
