The Importance of Fasting in Ramadan

SUMMARY: Fasting for one day in Ramadan is essential and not doing so without a concession will not be made up by fasting for a lifetime.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever does not fast one day in Ramadan without having a concession allowing that, fasting for a lifetime will not make up for that".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُطَوِّسِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ الْمُطَوِّسِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَفْطَرَ يَوْمًا مِنْ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ غَيْرِ رُخْصَةٍ لَمْ يُجْزِهِ صِيَامُ الدَّهْرِ

This hadith emphasizes the importance of fasting during the month of Ramadan. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said that if someone does not fast one day in Ramadan without having a concession allowing them to do so, then fasting for a lifetime will not make up for it. This hadith teaches us that we should take our religious obligations seriously and strive to fulfill them as best as we can.
