Fulfilling Obligations During Ramadan

SUMMARY: A man who had intercourse with his wife during Ramadan was asked to free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty poor persons. When he said he could not do any of these things, the Prophet ﷺ suggested that he feed his own family instead.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I am doomed.’ He said: 'Why are you doomed?’ He said: 'I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Free a slave.’ He said: 'I cannot.’ He said: 'Fast for two consecutive months.’ He said: 'I cannot.’ He said: 'Feed sixty poor persons.’ He said: 'I cannot.’ He said: 'Sit down.’ So he sat down, and while doing so a basketful of dates was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Go and give this in charity.’ He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth, there is no household between its two lava fields (ie, in Al-Madinah) that is more in need of it than us.’ He said: 'Then go and feed your family.’" Another chain from Abu Hurairah with additional words: "Then he (the Prophet SAW) said: "And fast a day in its place".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ـ ﷺ ـ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ ‏.‏ قَالَ: ‏"‏ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ: وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ـ ﷺ ـ ‏"‏ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ: لاَ أَجِدُهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ: ‏"‏ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ: لاَ أُطِيقُ ‏.‏ قَالَ: ‏"‏ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ: لاَ أَجِدُ ‏.‏ قَالَ: ‏"‏ اجْلِسْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَجَلَسَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ أُتِيَ بِمِكْتَلٍ يُدْعَى الْعَرَقَ فَقَالَ: ‏"‏ اذْهَبْ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ ‏"‏ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا ‏.‏ قَالَ: ‏"‏ فَانْطَلِقْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ عِيَالَكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: ‏"‏ وَصُمْ يَوْمًا مَكَانَهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fulfilling obligations during the holy month of Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad SAW was approached by a man who confessed to having intercourse with his wife during this sacred time and asked what should be done as penance. The Prophet SAW suggested freeing a slave, fasting for two consecutive months or feeding sixty poor people as atonement for this sin. When the man said he could not do any of these things, the Prophet SAW then suggested that he feed his own family instead. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to fulfill our obligations and duties in life even if it is difficult or challenging to do so; however if we are unable to fulfill them due to certain circumstances then Allah SWT will accept whatever we can offer in its place such as charity towards our own families and loved ones. It also reminds us of how merciful Allah SWT is towards His servants and how He will always provide an alternative solution when needed most.
