Grief and Mourning in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cursed a woman who scratches her face and rends her garment in grief.

It was narrated from Abu Umamah that the Messenger of Allah cursed the woman who scratches her face and rends her garment and cries that she is doomed (ie because of the death of this person).
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَرَامَةَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، وَالْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ لَعَنَ الْخَامِشَةَ وَجْهَهَا وَالشَّاقَّةَ جَيْبَهَا وَالدَّاعِيَةَ بِالْوَيْلِ وَالثُّبُورِ

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad is teaching us about how to properly grieve and mourn. He is warning us against excessive displays of grief, such as scratching one's face or tearing one's clothing. Instead, he encourages us to show our sorrow through prayer and supplication to Allah. This hadith also teaches us that we should not be too quick to judge someone else’s display of grief; instead, we should be patient with them as they go through their mourning process. Finally, this hadith reminds us that Allah is the only One who can truly provide comfort during times of distress.
