Sunan Ibn Majah 1191 (Book 5, Hadith 389) #30543
The Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Witr prayer, which was eleven Rakah in total. He would pray nine Rakah without sitting down and then two more after saying Salam. As he grew older and gained weight, he would pray seven Rakah for Witr and then two more after saying Salam.

It was narrated that Sa’d bin Hisham said: "I asked 'Aishah: 'O Mother of the Believers! Tell me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah .’ She said: 'We used to keep his tooth stick and water for ablution ready for him. Allah would wake him as He willed to during the night, and he would use the tooth stick and perform ablution, then he would pray nine Rak’ah, during which he would not sit until the eighth Rak’ah. Then he would call upon his Lord and remember Allah and praise Him and supplicate to Him. Then he would get up without saying the Salam. Then he would stand up and pray the ninth Rak’ah. Then he would sit and remember Allah and praise Him, and supplicate to his Lord and send blessing upon His Prophet. Then he would say Salam that we could hear. Then he would pray two Rak’ah after the Salam, while he was sitting down. That was eleven Rak’ah. When the Messenger of Allah grew older and had gained weight, he would pray Witr with seven Rak’ah and then pray two more Rak’ah after he had said the Salam.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Witr prayer, which was a special prayer that he used to perform at night. According to this hadith, when the Prophet was younger, his Witr prayer consisted of eleven Rakah - nine without sitting down and two after saying Salam. However, as he grew older and gained weight, his Witr prayer changed to seven Rakah followed by two more after saying Salam. During this special night time prayer, the Prophet would remember Allah by calling upon Him and praising Him as well as supplicating to Him for His mercy. He would also send blessings upon His beloved prophet before ending his prayers with a salam that could be heard by those around him. This hadith teaches us many values such as remembering Allah through dhikrullah or supplication during our prayers; sending blessings upon our beloved prophet; performing salat regularly; being mindful of our physical health; being consistent in our worship even when we age or gain weight; etc..
