Sunan Ibn Majah 934 (Book 5, Hadith 132) #30286
Eating Before Praying

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that if food is served and the Iqamah for prayer is given, one should start with the food.

It was narrated from Nafi’ that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'If food is served and the Iqamah for prayer is given, then start with the food". He said: "Ibn 'Umar ate dinner one night while he could hear the Iqamah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Prioritize eating before praying when presented with a choice between them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we are presented with a choice between eating and praying, we should prioritize eating first. This was demonstrated by Ibn 'Umar who ate dinner one night while he could hear the Iqamah. We can learn from this that it is important to take care of our physical needs before attending to our spiritual ones. It also shows us how important it is to be mindful of time management in order to balance both aspects of life.
