Sahih al-Bukhari 2971 (Book 56, Hadith 180) #2840
The Value of Charity

SUMMARY: Umar gave a horse to be used in Allah's Cause, but later on he found it being sold. So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) advised him not to buy it and not take back his gift of charity.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: 'Umar gave a horse to be used in Allah's Cause, but later on he found it being sold. So, he intended to buy it and asked Allah's Messenger who said, "Don't buy it and don't take back your gift of charity".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the value of charity and generosity. It tells us that when we give something away as a gift or charity, we should not expect anything in return. Umar was a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who gave away a horse for the cause of Allah but later found out that it was being sold. When he asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what he should do, the Prophet ﷺ advised him not to buy it back nor take back his gift or charity as this would defeat the purpose of giving in the first place. This hadith teaches us that when we give something away for good causes such as helping those in need or for religious purposes, we should do so with an open heart and without expecting anything in return from anyone else except from Allah Himself.
