Sahih al-Bukhari 2972 (Book 56, Hadith 181) #2841
The Prophet's Wish for Martyrdom

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wished to fight in Allah's cause and be martyred, but he was unable to due to lack of resources.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "Were it not for the fear that it would be difficult for my followers, I would not have remained behind any Sariya, (army-unit) but I don't have riding camels and have no other means of conveyance to carry them on, and it is hard for me that my companions should remain behind me. No doubt I wish I could fight in Allah's Cause and be martyred and come to life again to be martyred and come to life once more".

This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for martyrdom and sacrifice ourselves in the way of Allah if we are able. It also shows us that even though the Prophet was a great leader, he still faced difficulties like any other person would.
