Sahih al-Bukhari 2881 (Book 56, Hadith 96) #2756
The Reward for Loyalty

SUMMARY: Umar bin Al-Khattab distributed garments to the women of Medina, and when one good garment remained, he chose to give it to Um Salit instead of his own wife due to her loyalty and service during the battle of Uhud.

Narrated Tha'laba bin Abi Malik: 'Umar bin Al-Khattab distributed some garments amongst the women of Medina. One good garment remained, and one of those present with him said, "O chief of the believers! Give this garment to your wife, the (grand) daughter of Allah's Messenger ". They meant Um Kulthum, the daughter of 'Ali'.Umar said, Um Salit has more right (to have it)". Um Salit was amongst those Ansari women who had given the pledge of allegiance to Allah's Messenger '. 'Umar said, "She (ie Um Salit) used to carry the water skins for us on the day of Uhud".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your rewards; Show gratitude towards those who are loyal; Justly reward people for their loyalty regardless if they are related or not by blood ties;

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Umar bin Al-Khattab's generosity and gratitude towards Um Salit. He was distributing garments amongst the women of Medina when one good garment remained. One person suggested that he should give it to his own wife, who was also a grand daughter of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, Umar chose Um Salit instead due to her loyalty and service during the battle of Uhud where she used to carry water skins for them. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our rewards and show gratitude towards those who have been loyal in our lives. It also shows us that even if someone is not related or close by blood ties, their loyalty should be rewarded justly as well.
