Seeking Forgiveness Through Eating

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that if someone eats from a large bowl and licks it, the bowl will seek forgiveness for them.

Narrated Al-Mu'alla bin Rashid: "My grandmother, Umm 'Asim narrated to me - and she was the slave woman of Sinan bin Salamah - she said: 'Nubaishah Al-Khair entered upon us while we were eating from a large bowl. He narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever eats from A Qas'ah, then licks it, the Qas'ah will seek forgiveness for him". Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Gharib, we do not know of it except through the narration of Al-Mu'alla bin Rashid. And Yazid bin Harun and others among the A'immah reported this Hadith from Al-Mu'alla bin Rashid.

QUICK LESSONS:
Eat from a qas'a with sincerity .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Al-Mu’alla bin Rashid who heard it from his grandmother Umm ‘Asim who was the slave woman of Sinan bin Salamah. It is also reported by Yazid bin Harun and other A’immah from Al-Mu’alla bin Rashid. The hadith states that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that if someone eats from a large bowl or container called a qas’ah and then licks it clean, then the qas’ah will seek forgiveness for them. This means that even though we may not be able to ask for forgiveness directly ourselves, our actions can still lead to us being forgiven by Allah SWT. We should strive to do good deeds in order to be forgiven and this hadith shows us how even something as simple as licking a bowl can lead to us being forgiven if done with sincerity and faith in Allah SWT.
