Jami at-Tirmidhi 1288 (Book 14, Hadith 90) #26863
Respect for Others' Property

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught us to be respectful of other people's property and to not take what is not ours, even if we are in need.

Narrated Rafi' bin 'Amr: "I was throwing stones at a date-palm belonging to some of the Ansar. They took me along with them to the Prophet . He said: "O Rafi'! Why were you throwing stones at their date-palm?'" He said: "I said: 'Out of hunger, O Messenger of Allah! He said: 'Do not throw stones at them, eat what falls. May Allah fill you and quench your thirst'." This Hadith is Hasan Gharib Sahih.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other people's property even if you are in need or hungry/thirsty.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting other people's property. Even if we are in need, it is important that we do not take what does not belong to us. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was teaching Rafi' bin 'Amr a lesson when he saw him throwing stones at a date-palm belonging to some of the Ansar. He asked him why he was doing this and Rafi' replied that he was hungry and thirsty. Instead of punishing him, the Prophet showed mercy and compassion by telling him not to throw stones at them but rather eat what falls from the tree instead. This hadith teaches us that even when we are in need, it is important for us to respect other people's property and show mercy towards others as well as ourselves.
