Sahih al-Bukhari 25 (Book 2, Hadith 18) #25
Fighting for Faith

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Muslims should fight against those who do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, Muhammad (PBUH), until they accept the truth and perform their religious duties.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger , and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah".

The Prophet ﷺ was commanded by Allah to fight against people who deny Him or reject His message. He was also ordered to ensure that these people offer prayers perfectly, pay obligatory charity, and follow Islamic laws. If they do so then their lives and property will be safe from the Prophet's army except for Islamic laws. Ultimately it is Allah Who will judge them on the Day of Judgment according to their deeds.
