The Best Deeds According to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The best deed is to believe in Allah and His Apostle, followed by participating in Jihad for Allah's cause, and then performing Hajj Mabroor.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger was asked, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad). The questioner then asked, "What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, "To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause". The questioner again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To perform Hajj (Pilgrim age to Mecca) Mabroor, (which is accepted by Allah and is performed with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure only and not to show off and without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet)".
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، وَمُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سُئِلَ أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قِيلَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ ‏"‏ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قِيلَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ ‏"‏ حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ

This hadith narrated by Abu Huraira explains the best deeds according to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He said that the best deed is to believe in Allah and His Apostle. This means having faith in God and following His teachings as revealed through His messenger. The second best deed is participating in Jihad for Allah's cause. This means striving hard for a noble purpose such as defending one’s faith or helping those who are oppressed or persecuted. Lastly, he said that performing Hajj Mabroor is also a good deed. This refers to going on pilgrimage with sincere intentions of seeking God’s pleasure without any show off or committing any sin while following the traditions of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
