Sunan Abi Dawud 4369 (Book 40, Hadith 19) #24660
Punishment for Apostasy

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a group of people who apostatized and raided the camels of the Prophet, killing a believer in the process. As punishment, their hands and feet were cut off and their eyes put out.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: Some people raided the camels of the Prophet , drove them off, and apostatized. They killed the herdsman of the Messenger of Allah who was a believer. He (the Prophet) sent (people) in pursuit of them and they were caught. He had their hands and feet cut off, and their eyes put out. The verse regarding fighting against Allah and His Prophet was then revealed. These were the people about whom Anas ibn Malik informed al-Hajjaj when he asked him.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a group of people who committed an act of apostasy by raiding the camels belonging to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They also killed one of his herdsmen, who was a believer. In response to this crime, they were punished by having their hands and feet cut off as well as having their eyes put out. This punishment was revealed in the Quran as Allah's commandment for those who fight against Him and His Prophet ﷺ. The lesson from this hadith is that it is important to remain loyal to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ at all times, even if it means sacrificing our own lives or possessions in order to do so. We must also remember that any act which goes against Allah's commands will be met with severe consequences both in this life and hereafter.
