Punishment of Thieves in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) punishing those who stole his camels and Allah reprimanding him for it.

Narrated AbuzZinad: When the Messenger of Allah cut off (the hands and feet of) those who had stolen his camels and he had their eyes put out by fire (heated nails), Allah reprimanded him on that (action), and Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution or crucifixion".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment of thieves in Islam. It narrates an incident where the Prophet Muhammad PBUH punished those who stole his camels by cutting off their hands and feet and putting out their eyes with heated nails. However, Allah reprimanded him for this action, as He revealed that execution or crucifixion should be the punishment for those who wage war against Him and His Messenger. This teaches us that even though theft is a crime, we should not take matters into our own hands but rather leave it to justice systems to decide on punishments. We must also remember that no matter how angry we are at someone’s wrongdoings, we must never go beyond what Allah has prescribed as punishment.
