Selling Slaves for Freedom

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ ordered the sale of a slave who was promised freedom after his master's death, but had no other property.

Jabir b. 'Abd Allah said: A man declared that his slave would be free after his death, but he had no other property. So the Prophet ordered (to sell him). He was then sold for seven hundred or nine hundred (Dirhams).

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises and fulfill them if you can't find any alternative way .
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who declared that his slave would be free after his death but he had no other property. In this situation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered to sell the slave in order to gain money for him to be able to purchase his freedom. The slave was sold for either seven hundred or nine hundred dirhams which is an ancient form of currency used in Arabia at that time. This hadith teaches us that it is important to keep our promises and if we are unable to do so then we should find alternative ways of fulfilling them. It also shows us how much importance Islam places on freeing slaves and giving them their rights as human beings.
