Sunan Abi Dawud 3940 (Book 31, Hadith 15) #24230
Fair Emancipation of Slaves

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the emancipation of slaves, and how it should be done fairly.

'Abd Allah b. 'Umar reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: If anyone emancipates his share in slave, a fair price for the slave should be fixed, give his partners their shares, and the slave be thus emancipated. Otherwise he is emancipated to the extent of the share which he emancipated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fixing a fair price for slaves when emancipating them; giving all partners their shares; respecting other people's rights; valuing freedom; treating others with respect regardless of social status or position in life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the emancipation of slaves, which was a common practice in the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It teaches us that when emancipating a slave, it should be done fairly and with justice. A fair price for the slave should be fixed and all partners involved in owning the slave must receive their share accordingly. If someone only emancipates his own share in a slave, then only that portion will be freed from slavery. This hadith emphasizes on fairness and justice when dealing with such matters as well as respecting other people's rights even if they are not present at that moment. It also teaches us to value freedom and to treat others with respect regardless of their social status or position in life.
