Sunan Abi Dawud 2871 (Book 18, Hadith 10) #23161
Treating Orphans with Respect

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how Allah revealed verses to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) regarding the rights of orphans and how they should be treated.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: When Allah, Most High, revealed the verses: "Come not nigh to the orphan's property except to improve it". And "Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans", everyone who had an orphan with him went and separated his food from his (orphan's) food, and his drink from his drink, and began to detain the remaining food which he (the orphan) himself ate or spoiled. This fell heavy on them, and they mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah . So Allah, Most High, revealed the verse: "They ask thee concerning orphans. Say: The best thing to do is what is for their good; if ye mix their affairs with yours, they are your brethren". Then they mixed their food with his food and their drink with his drink.

QUICK LESSONS:
Treating orphans kindly; mixing one's affairs together with theirs; providing basic needs such as food, clothing etc.; giving love and affection just like any other family member would receive from us etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of treating orphans with respect and kindness. Allah revealed verses to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that instructed people to not come near an orphan's property except for improving it. He also revealed that those who unjustly eat up an orphan's property will be punished. People were so scared by this revelation that they began separating their food and drink from the food and drink of any orphans in their care, which was too hard on them so Allah then revealed a verse saying that it is best to mix their affairs with yours as if they are your own brothers or sisters. This teaches us that we should treat orphans like our own family members and take care of them as if they were our own children or siblings. We must ensure that we provide them with all their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter etc., while also providing them love and affection just like any other family member would receive from us.
