Sunan Abi Dawud 1852 (Book 11, Hadith 132) #22144
Eating Wild Animals with Permission of the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) allowed his companions to eat a wild ass that they had killed while on their way to Makkah.

Abu Qatadah said that he accompanied the Apostle of Allaah and he stayed behind on the way to Makkah with some of his companions who were wearing ihram, although he was not. When he saw a wild ass he mounted his horse and asked them to hand him his whip, but they refused. He then asked them to hand him his lance. When they refused, he took it, chased the while ass and killed it. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allaah ate it and some refused (to eat). When they met the Apostle of Allaah they asked him about it. He said that was the food that Allaah provided you for eating.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek permission from Allah before doing something .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permission given by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his companions to eat a wild ass that they had killed while on their way to Makkah. Some of them were wearing ihram and some were not. When they asked for permission from the Prophet ﷺ he said that it was food provided by Allah and so it was permissible for them to eat it. This teaches us that we should always seek permission from Allah before doing something and if He gives us permission then we should do it with gratitude and thankfulness. It also teaches us that even in difficult times when food is scarce, Allah will provide sustenance for His people if they turn to Him in prayer and supplication.
