Sunan Abi Dawud 1733 (Book 11, Hadith 13) #22025
Validity of Hiring Riding-Beasts for Hajj

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that it is permissible to hire a riding-beast for the purpose of Hajj and that one's Hajj will still be valid.

AbuUmamah at-Taymi said: I was a man who used to give (riding-beasts) on hire for this purpose (for travelling during the pilgrimage) and the people would tell (me): Your hajj is not valid. So I met Ibn Umar and told him: AbuAbdurRahman, I am a man who gives (riding-beast) on hire for this purpose (ie for hajj), and the people tell me: Your hajj is not valid. Ibn Umar replied: Do you not put on ihram (the pilgrim dress), call the talbiyah (labbayk), circumambulate the Ka'bah, return from Arafat and lapidate Jamrahs? I said: Why not? Then he said: Your hajj is valid. a man came to the Prophet and asked him the same question you have asked me. The Messenger of Allah kept silence and did not answer him till this verse came down: "It is no sin for you that you seek the bounty of your Lord". The Messenger of Allah sent for him and recited this verse to him and said: Your hajj is valid.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the permissibility of hiring a riding-beast for the purpose of performing Hajj, which is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. The Prophet Muhammad was asked about this and he remained silent until Allah revealed a verse in the Quran which stated that it was no sin to seek bounty from God. The Prophet then sent for the man who asked him and recited this verse, confirming that his hajj would be valid even if he hired a riding beast. This hadith teaches us that we should not judge others on their methods of performing religious duties as long as they are following Islamic teachings and laws. It also reminds us to always seek bounty from Allah in all our endeavours, as He will provide us with guidance when we need it most.
