Mercy and Forgiveness in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed mercy to a killer and advised the heir of the victim not to take revenge, as it would lead them to Hell.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A man was killed during the time of the Messenger of Allah, and the Killer was brought to the Prophet. He handed him over to the heir of the victim, but the killer said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah I did not means to kill him'. The Messenger of Allah said to the next of kin: 'If he is telling the truth and you kill him, you will go to the Fire'. So he let him go. He had been tied with a string and he went out dragging his string, so he became known as Dhul-Nis'ah (the one with the string).

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards those who have wronged you or others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mercy and forgiveness that is encouraged in Islam. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that a man was killed during the time of Prophet Muhammad, and when his killer was brought before him, he said that he did not mean to kill him. The Prophet then advised the next of kin not to take revenge as it would lead them to Hell. He then let him go, with a string tied around his neck so he became known as Dhul-Nis'ah or ‘the one with the string’. This hadith teaches us that even though justice must be served for any wrongdoings, we should still show mercy towards those who have wronged us or others because Allah is Most Merciful and forgiving. We should also forgive those who have wronged us instead of seeking revenge because this will bring us closer to Allah’s pleasure.
