Sunan an-Nasai 4014 (Book 37, Hadith 49) #18547
Three Most Grievous Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the most grievous sin is setting up a rival to Allah, followed by killing one's own child and committing adultery with someone else's wife.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that created you'. I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child so that he will not eat with you'. I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, teaches us about the three most grievous sins according to Prophet Muhammad. The first and foremost of these sins is setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that created you. This means that worshipping anyone or anything other than Allah is considered the worst sin as it goes against His commands and teachings. The second most grievous sin mentioned in this hadith is killing one’s own child so that he will not eat with you. This means that taking away someone’s life without any valid reason or justification is considered a major sin in Islam. Lastly, committing adultery with someone else’s wife was also mentioned as one of the worst sins according to Prophet Muhammad. All these three sins are considered very serious in Islam and should be avoided at all costs if we want to stay on the right path of righteousness and piety.
