Sunan an-Nasai 4013 (Book 37, Hadith 48) #18546
The Most Grievous Sins According to the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the most grievous sin is setting up a rival to Allah, followed by killing one's child and committing adultery with someone else's spouse.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is the most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that has created you'. I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child for fear that he may eat with you'. I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only One God; Take care of children; Respect others' relationships; Abide by Islamic teachings on morality

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked what the most grievous sin was and he answered that it was setting up a rival to Allah while it is He who has created you. This means that any form of idolatry or polytheism is considered a major sin in Islam as it goes against the core belief of worshipping only one God. The second most grievous sin according to him was killing your own child for fear that he may eat with you. This teaches us how important it is for parents to take care of their children and not neglect them out of fear or worry about providing for them. Lastly, he said that committing adultery with someone else’s spouse was also considered a major sin in Islam as it goes against its teachings on morality and respect for others’ relationships. All these sins are considered very serious in Islam and should be avoided at all costs if one wishes to lead an ethical life according to Islamic teachings.
