Sunan an-Nasai 3849 (Book 35, Hadith 89) #18464
Vows and Disobedience to Allah

SUMMARY: Making a vow to do something that is not in one's control or an act of disobedience to Allah is not permissible.

It was narrated that 'Imran bin Husain said: The Messenger of Allah said: "There is no vow for the son of Adam with regard to that which he does not possess, or to do an act of disobedience to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime"'.Ali bin Zaid contradicted him -for he reported it from Al-Hasan from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when making vows and promises .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that it is not permissible for a person to make a vow with regards to something they do not possess or an act of disobedience towards Allah. It was narrated by 'Imran bin Husain who reported it from Al-Hasan from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah. However, Ali bin Zaid contradicted this narration as he also reported it from Al-Hasan and 'Abdur-Rahman but with different words. This hadith teaches us the importance of being mindful when making vows and promises as we should only make them for things we can actually fulfill and never for anything that goes against the teachings of Islam or the commands of Allah.
