Racing Horses with the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad organized two races for horses, one lean and one not lean, and Abdullah participated in the race.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah organized a race for horses that had been made lean, from Al-Hafya' and its finish line was Thaniyat Al-Wada', and he organized another race for horses that had not been made lean, from Ath-Thaniyyah to the Masjid of Banu Zuraiq, and 'Abdullah was among those who took part in the race.
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ، قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سَابَقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ الَّتِي قَدْ أُضْمِرَتْ مِنَ الْحَفْيَاءِ وَكَانَ أَمَدُهَا ثَنِيَّةَ الْوَدَاعِ وَسَابَقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ الَّتِي لَمْ تُضْمَرْ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ بَنِي زُرَيْقٍ وَأَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ كَانَ مِمَّنْ سَابَقَ بِهَا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a time when the Prophet Muhammad organized two races for horses. One race was for horses that had been made lean and it started from Al-Hafya' to Thaniyat Al-Wada'. The other race was for horses that had not been made lean and it started from Ath-Thaniyyah to the Masjid of Banu Zuraiq. Abdullah took part in this second race. This hadith teaches us about how important physical activity is as well as how important it is to take part in activities with others. It also shows us that even though we may be competing against each other, we should still be kind and respectful towards each other while doing so.
