Hereditary Color and Judgement

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the color of a child is hereditary and should not be judged.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that a man from Banu Fazarah came to the Messenger of Allah and said: "My wife has given birth to a black boy". The Messenger of Allah said: "Do you have camels?" He said: "Yes". He said: "What color are they?" He said: "Red". He said: "Are there any gray ones among them?" He said: "There are some gray ones among them". He said: "Where do you think they come from?" He said: "Perhaps it is hereditary". He said: "Likewise, perhaps this is hereditary".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for others regardless of physical appearance; Judging others based on character rather than appearance; Not discriminating against someone because of skin colour; Acceptance of differences in others ;Equality among all humans regardless of race or ethnicity ;Understanding that certain traits may be inherited from one’s parents .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to not judge people based on their physical characteristics, such as skin color. In this hadith, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ with news that his wife had given birth to a black baby boy. The Prophet ﷺ asked him if he owned camels, and when he said yes, asked what color they were. When he said some were red and some were gray, the Prophet ﷺ explained that just like camels can have different colors due to inheritance from their parents, so too could this baby's skin color be inherited from his parents. This teaches us that we should not judge people based on their physical characteristics because it may be something they cannot control or change. We should instead focus on judging people by their character traits such as kindness or generosity which are things we can control ourselves.
