Calculating Ramadan's Crescent

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad advised people to not start fasting until they see the crescent of Ramadan and to not stop fasting until they see it again. If the crescent is obscured, then calculate when it should be.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah mentioned Ramadan and said: "Do not fast until you see the crescent, and do not stop fasting until you see it, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then work it out".

QUICK LESSONS:
Wait for sighting of crescent moon before beginning or ending a fast; Use calculations if necessary; Follow Islamic teachings correctly during this special month; Worship & Reflect during this holy period .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad was teaching his followers about the holy month of Ramadan. He said that when the month begins, people should wait for the crescent moon to appear in order to start their fasts. When it is time for Ramadan to end, people should wait for the crescent moon again before ending their fasts. If there are clouds blocking them from seeing it, then they can use calculations in order to determine when it will appear and when they should begin or end their fasts accordingly. This hadith teaches us that we must be patient and use our knowledge in order to make sure we are following Islamic teachings correctly during this special month of worship and reflection.
