Prohibitions on Lamentation and Mourning

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited people from raising their voices in lamentation, shaving their heads, or rending their garments.

It was narrated from Yazid bin Aws, that: Abu Musa said he fell unconscious and an Umm Walad of his wept. When he woke up, he asked her: "Have you not heard what the Messenger of Allah said?" She said: "He said: 'He is not one of us who raises his voice in lamentation, shaves his head, or rends his garments"".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show patience during difficult times; Express grief through prayer; Have faith in Allah; Respect others by not engaging in prohibited behaviors while mourning/grieving .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibitions of certain behaviors when mourning or grieving for a loved one. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that it is not permissible to raise one's voice in lamentation, shave one's head, or rend one's garments as a sign of grief. These acts are considered to be disrespectful and unbecoming of a Muslim. Instead, Muslims should show patience and faith in Allah during times of difficulty and sorrow. They should remember that Allah knows best what is good for them and trust that He will provide them with comfort during these difficult times. It is important to remember that grief can be expressed through prayer and supplication rather than outwardly visible signs such as those mentioned above.
