Sunan an-Nasai 1864 (Book 21, Hadith 47) #16475
The Characteristics of a True Believer

SUMMARY: Striking one's cheeks, rending one's garment, and calling the calls of the Jahiliyyah are not characteristics of a true believer.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet said: "He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, rends his garment, and calls the calls of the Jahiliyyah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Express emotions through prayer and supplication to Allah for guidance and help in difficult times .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the characteristics of a true believer. It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet said that those who strike their cheeks, rend their garments, and call out in the manner of pre-Islamic times are not considered to be true believers. Striking one’s cheeks and rending one’s garments were common practices during pre-Islamic times as expressions of grief or sorrow. However, these actions have no place in Islam as they do not reflect faith or piety. Instead, Muslims should express their emotions through prayer and supplication to Allah for guidance and help in difficult times. Furthermore, calling out in the manner of pre-Islamic times is also discouraged as it does not reflect faith or piety either; rather it reflects ignorance and lack of knowledge about Islamic teachings which emphasize patience during difficult times instead. Therefore this hadith teaches us that true believers should refrain from such actions which do not reflect faith or piety but instead demonstrate ignorance about Islamic teachings.
