Sahih al-Bukhari 1498 (Book 24, Hadith 98) #1437
Repaying Debts with Honesty

SUMMARY: A man from Bani Israel borrowed 1000 dinars and when the time for repayment came, he was unable to find a boat so he put the money in a piece of wood and threw it into the sea. The creditor found his money when he sawed the wood.

Narrated Abu Huraira The Prophet said, "A man from Bani Israel asked someone from Bani Israel to give him a loan of one thousand Dinars and the later gave it to him. The debtor went on a voyage (when the time for the payment of the debt became due) but he did not find a boat, so he took a piece of wood and bored it and put 1000 diners in it and threw it into the sea. The creditor went out and took the piece of wood to his family to be used as fire-wood". . And the Prophet narrated the narration (and said), "When he sawed the wood, he found his money".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest while repaying your debts

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about repaying debts with honesty. It tells us that even if we are unable to repay our debt, we should still be honest about it and not try to hide or run away from it. The story is about a man from Bani Israel who borrowed 1000 dinars but was unable to find a boat when it was time for him to repay his debt. He then put the money in a piece of wood and threw it into the sea, hoping that his creditor would eventually find out what happened. When his creditor sawed open the piece of wood, he found all of his money inside! This hadith teaches us that honesty is always better than dishonesty and that even if we are unable to pay back our debts, we should still be honest about it instead of trying to hide or run away from them.
